Literature is an effective way of understanding a culture of a particular time, class or social group. With literature we see countries and people as they were, and experience the different climates, languages and customs they lived among.
Literature lets us transmit the deeper meanings of a culture — its stereotypes, archetypes and collective conscience — and creates the possibility of social change through a critique that can be heard.
An author expresses cultural values by showing an audience the traits and concepts that define a culture. Race, gender, ethnicity, location and heritage all play their part in the story that is told.
Literature reflects both historical events and the culture of a people. It lets a reader step back in time and learn about life from those who walked before us — what they cared about, what they made and how they lived.
